The joy of sharing (2) / Paraty, 2014 - Workshop A

It was about 40 days ago, the 5th international urban sketching symposium in Paraty- Brazil. I presented an approach in urban sketching in my workshop. Here, I describe more about the workshop and also a short report of what happened during the workshop in Paraty.

Workshop A: The joy of the movement (of learning) from simplicity to complexity (in sketch)

 Step1:

Beginning with free lines and colors. Mixing pigments on paper not on our palletes. the idea is not to have any pre-conceptions as to what the work will look like when completed nor to achieve a particular image that we have in our mind.

We were trying not to control the colors.
Then, using new ideas based on our inspiration of the moment to see where this takes us. 
 In this section, I requested the participants using only primary colors at first, for simplifying the process. There is also a post in the USK website that I used merely primary colors. And also after mixing the primary colors, I asked them to switch their works with their friends, so each one could work on a piece which was new and fresh to her or his mind.

I started this piece and then Kumi finished the work by adding a new layer on it.

It could also make the sense of cooperation in action. And also I think through this cooperation and sharing the ideas, we would have a feeling of freedom of compulsion about an special work and therefore it would make a different kind of fresh energy for observation and working.

In the workshop groups, I had some professional artists, teachers and instructors and some talented sketchers that I was excited to see their ways of working on the paper and their results. It seems hard to teach them. But not very much, when you know that the teaching is also a part of learning process.
It was exciting for me, when I was seeing that others are also enjoying of playing with pigments.




Step 2

Finding a view which suit our shapes and forms.
Working on adapting the free forms to match with the chosen perspective. (with minimal changes to the free forms)
This step may repeated two times or more, and also the participants may switch their works with others and make ideas on other's works.
 From the first to the last workshop, I made some changes in my method of presentation. In the last workshop I started with the simple demo (I had done this step at the end of other workshops).

Step 3:

I actually didn't have enough time for this step, but it can be experienced more in future in our daily sketches. 


 After the first 2 steps we go back to our common way of sketching:
-         We use a subject matter as the source
-         Designing the composition, applying perspective geometry and drawing the forms
-         Adding colors to the forms and shapes

( of course, these may have some changes in different styles)

And we survey the influence of our exercises on the previous steps

In our approach:
-         Beginning with colors exercise and playing with freeform lines and pigments
-         Finding a suitable view and adapting the free forms with minimal changes to match with the view.
And our approach might be coincided with the common way of sketching or in the background of that.


Some words about the learning goals:

It's about 10 years that I am busy in art and architectural education and perspective geometry is one of my favorite courses. When I am doing an sketch or paint, I am getting many helps from geometry in the background. But in this workshop I tried to display that, how simple and joyfull it can be to make a good result with carefully observing and following not only around but also wonderful happenings on our papers (as I tried to show in my short time demos) .


I stayed in Sao Paulo half of a day before going to Paraty and a whole day after symposium. These are some giftes from there:
